Mio 310 hack
And hacking it was really easy. I have a Garmin eTrex Venture. I was so impressed with it. My sister-in-law had a Magellen c I think and I played with that a little when she first got it, but I liked the Mio and its internal, rechargeable battery.
Shortly after that, I heard Clark Howard talk about how useful a mobile auto-based GPS unit was and how cheaply they could be found for. He made a lot of sense! Taken from his website :. GPS units are cheap and easy to use. Do you remember when GPS units were something only the very wealthy could afford? Times have changed quite a bit. Very cool the updating the POI database to be larger than the tomtom database.
I just tried to change the boot splash image, bricked my GPS. Please be kind and respectful to help make the comments section excellent. Comment Policy. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. The iGo software MioMap 3. There are lots of web sites offering POI lists. It's best to copy the iGO. This software is still "beta", so expect some bugs.
It's certainly portable enough, and it has the basics. If you plan to navigate off-road, you must go to the MioMap Advanced Settings screen and un-check the "Always on road" setting - otherwise the Mio will always show your position as being on the nearest road when you wander away from the road.
But there are some drawbacks to using the Mio for offroad navigation: 1. The Mio's built-in maps are road maps, with no topographic data and very few details of offroad areas. I don't know of any better offroad maps you can use with the Mio software does anyone? The Mio's plastic shell is not rugged or waterproof. I've dropped my Mio onto a concrete floor without harm, and you can certainly put it in a plastic bag, but there is a risk.
Also, the touch screen is sensitive and there's no Lock button to prevent accidental commands while bouncing around in a pocket. You can set an off-road point as a waypoint or destination with MioMap, but its navigation functions are strictly on-road - the directions it gives always follow roads, even if you set it to "Pedestrian" and "Shortest Route" and the nearest roads are far away.
It has no compass navigation display to show you a heading to the next waypoint or destination, so you have to figure that out for yourself on the map display probably using Track Up orientation in the Map view would be best. It is fairly quick to show your orientation when you start moving, and it does actually show the sun position in the 3D view but only when the sun is low on the horizon and you are facing the right way.
You can record your exact route using the Track Log function and display it on the map in real time, but there's no way to get the Mio to navigate you through a reverse track automatically. You would have to do that visually, following the marked route on the map. The MioMap software will only show route distances and estimated times for the nonsensical road routing it calculates, not for "as the crow flies" route, so you can't get any estimate of distance and time to go for offroad travel.
