Missing shortcuts to network folders disappear windows 7

Thanks for your feedback. To prevent the task from running you need to disable the task in the task schedular: start-programs-accessories-system tools-task scheduler Expand the tree in the left hand pane until you get to Task Scheduler Library-Microsoft-Windows-Diagnosis.

In the right hand pane, right click the task named Scheduled and click Disable. I have a number of shortcut icons on my Windows 7 RC1 desktop to networked items - some are folders on a NAS, some are mapped as drives, etc. However, sometimes Windows 7 seems to simply remove all of them without notice and I have to recreate all the shortcuts to my NAS items again. I wondered at first if this may have been because Windows would sometimes boot before all of my network devices became available, but when that happens it just correctly marks the icons with a red cross to indicate that it couldn't find them at boot time, and as soon as the NAS is available then the shortcuts work fine.

However at random intervals, all seven of these shortcuts simply disappear from the desktop. You might accomplish this by removing all but 4 of your most used shortcuts on the Desktop. If have more than 4 shortcuts, you can also create a folder on your desktop and move the shortcuts to that folder. These shortcuts will not be removed since they don't sit directly on the desktop.

If you must have more than four broken shortcuts on your desktop, you can disable the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Note If you disable the System Maintenance troubleshooter, all the maintenance tasks that it performs are disabled.

Therefore, we recommend that you use Method 1. To disable the System Maintenance troubleshooter, follow these steps:.

Click Start , and then click Control Panel. Under System and Security , click Find and fix problems. Note: If System and Security is not displayed you will need to change how you are viewing Control Panel. The machines not listed under Network are accessible by typing their sharename into the addressbar eg. It's just that those other machines Windows 10 prof. As said I could map them as shared drives with a letter.

But I'd rather have them appear under network to be able to browse them PCs instead of a bunch of single drive-shares. Well that's what I was aiming at, but neither the drive-shares nor the PC icons are appearing. After closing and reopening the explorer the icons are gone. To make them icons reappear the manual drive map has to be issued again. SMB1 is disabled on all other machines. However explorer does not display machines " TP-W " and "C" on any of them 3 machines.

The other way around. I believe the available machines should be listed under "Network" and browseable in the right pane. I would assume that a little thingy somewhere in the registry is causing this. You must be desperate for attention. I went through your sequence as written followed the instructions! NW went from 1 of 3 machines all running win10 home seeing other computers, to all 3 seeing each other. Report abuse. Details required :.

From the looks of the solution proposed it should. Yeah, we disabled it via GPO because modifying the script may work for some time but revert back to its original state with windows update or other ways. I created a shortcut to a folder on a network drive, then put all my shortcuts in that.

How about a fix that actually makes the broken-icon deletion function properly. It would look something like this suedo code:. As system changes will be effected to your operating system be aware that it might not work in your instance. Best thing about it is that the shortcut folder is on my NAS meaning I can access them from any computer.

Arguments 2. ReadAll objFile. WriteLine strNewText objFile. You can modify this path to be anywhere accessible to your clients. I have similar problems with shortcut icons occasionally disappearing from my desktop. There is plenty of room there, and they were displayed OK there before.

In my case, I have one user out of about 50 who logs into terminal services with a roaming profile. His desktop is completely empty when he logs in, even though the Desktop folder in his profile has them all there.

If I try adding a file or folder to the desktop, all of the icons will spontaneously reappear. Today I deleted the desktop. A year later that coworker complained again and I discovered that both computers were back to saying GT 4. Clearly windows update restored the disgusting MS code. So, today I used the script from jasofbass and put it into my sbs login script. There are NO broken links and frequently used shortcuts keep going away. This is total crap. I hate Microsoft.

So much for alpha and beta testing before release to the public. I did the regedit keys additions. Hopefully that works. F-you Microsoft for this asinine auto-deletion masquerading as something necessary resulting in a waste of my time. I had taken to storing them in a zip file so I can put them back with less of a pain. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
