Well, just goes to show you can't trust anything you read online, eh? The line sold by my Eagle dealer is Showcase. I've used these and they are a lot nicer than the vinyl windows your father hated. Not a bad product. Very good for some applications. The Weather Shield brand looks very similar to me, although I have never installed any of them. You really aughta have a look at some of the newer ones if you haven't seen a vinyl unit in a few years.
I'd use either of those brands before I'd put a wood-framed window in the shower. I really would. Not that I've never installed wood windows in showers, mind you, I just wouldn't recommend it now that useful vinyls are available. Went to a couple of window stores today. Not so happy with the straight vinyl windows. It seems that the best option is a glass block window. I have done an extensive seach of the threads for info on glass block windows. I got some info but I still have a couple of questions.
In my case I will be framing a brand new opening for this window. I want to make sure that I frame the opening properly as well as keep it watertight. House framing is 2x4 construction. Then build the blocks? I looked at the pittsburghcorning site and saw that they make complete unit called lightwise.
I am not sure if built it yourself or prebuilt is the way to go. I don't know how you smooth the joints on the outside of th house. Looking for some guidance since the whole project can't begin until I figure out this darn window. I've never used the vinyl system on glass blocks and probably never will because I'm a mason.
After the glass block installation has set up I would "flash" the Kerdi by adding a second strip the would go right up to where the tile will meet the window, and I would cement it to the mortar with thin set. There is no possible way that water could ever get into your substrate. Tile to the glass block. I grout the joint, but you could caulk it if you want to mess with that stuff. John I get that you are a motor man but remember you had ditched the mud showers for a more advanced mudless option Kerdi :D If I install the glass block as described using mortor, how easy it is going to be to smooth out the mortor joints on the outside of the window?
I assume that the window is installed inside out. Am I going to be running down the steps inside and up a ladder outside? If I install sheetrock or cbu on all four side around the inside of the framing and then install the glass block between the sheetrock and cbu sides won't I have exposed sheetrock or cbu on the outside of the window around all of the edges?
Won't this soak up moisture from the outside? If I have shingle type siding, how do you finish the outside of a glass block window. Powder coating is also available Our LightWise Windows are protected by a limited year warranty.
